Accident Report

Jefferson County, PA — August 20, 2026, Michael Rougier was killed in a truck accident at about 4 p.m. on Interstate 80/Z.H. Confair Memorial Highway.

Authorities said an eastbound 2022 Freightliner semi-truck crashed into a 2023 Peterbilt semi-truck that was slowing for traffic near mile marker 74.

Freightliner driver Michael J. Rougier, 59, of Rio Rancho, NM was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash north of Corsica, according to authorities. His dog, a Rottweiler named Diesel, ran into the woods after the crash, but was later found and returned to the driver’s family.

The Peterbilt driver was not injured, authorities said.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Union Township crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s not clear at this time what caused this crash. Did the Peterbilt stop suddenly? Did it have working brake lights? Was the Freightliner driver distracted or fatigued? Did his truck have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? Questions like these should help authorities figure out what happened on this stretch of I-80.

Both trucks should yield a wealth of information for investigators to use in reconstructing this crash. Their engine control modules will contain data on speed, braking and steering inputs, while many fleet vehicles are equipped with dashboard cameras these days, allowing authorities to see what the drivers saw, or didn’t see.

Authorities also should look at the trucking companies. Hiring records could show if the drivers were properly vetted and trained, without exceeding the allowed number of hours behind the wheel before this crash. Maintenance records could indicate if either truck was overdue for any scheduled repairs.

A thorough investigation should give the Freightliner driver’s family a clear picture of what caused this crash.
