Authorities said a pedestrian was hit by a 2015 Kia Optima just east of Skillman Street. The car did not stop after the collision.

The pedestrian, 38-year-old South Dakota resident Michael Damian Herrera, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to authorities.

The driver of the vehicle that allegedly hit the man was found in a nearby parking lot, authorities said. The driver allegedly was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash, but he is not facing charges yet.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Dallas County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Authorities appear to have identified the vehicle that hit the pedestrian in this crash, but we still don’t know why it happened. Was the driver impaired or distracted? Or did the vehicle have a mechanical issue that contributed to the crash, like failed brakes or unexpected acceleration?

Investigators should work to answer those questions by poring over witness statements, evidence from the scene, data from the vehicle any available traffic or security camera footage. An independent examination may be needed to check the vehicle’s mechanical status, since in my experience most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such a review.

This may seem like a lot of effort, but the pedestrian’s family deserves to know what happened here.
