Accident Report
Oklahoma City, OK — April 8, 2026, Vernon Brake, Mercedes Bayne and a child were killed in a truck accident at about 11:30 a.m. on Interstate 35.
Authorities said a southbound SUV lost control and went through the median while trying to avoid debris in the road and crashed into an Oklahoma Highway Patrol vehicle. The debris was part of a load thought to have been lost by a southbound truck.
SUV driver Mercedes Bayne, 36, and her 4-year-old daughter were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash south of Hefner Road, as was trooper Vernon Brake, according to authorities.
Authorities have tracked down the truck believed to have been involved in this crash, but they have not released any additional information about the Oklahoma County crash at this time. The accident is still under investigation.
