Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

After single-vehicle wrecks, I’m always curious to know if authorities looked into things like mechanical issues, medical conditions, road hazards, manufacturers’ defects, or even the possibility of a hit-and-run. Often, investigators blame the driver and move on. Factors such as speeding, drunk driving, and distracted driving are certainly common, but jumping to conclusions only risks letting something important slip through the cracks. Even those more common factors can involve incredibly complex extenuating circumstances authorities don’t always consider. That’s why it’s always worth ensuring authorities are looking into even unlikely possible factors in their investigations. If they aren’t, there have to be safeguards in place to catch whatever slips through the cracks.
