Accident Report

August 21, 2026, Marina Diaz de Pacheco was killed following a tour bus fire accident early Friday along the 60 Freeway (Pomona Freeway).

Right now, details about the accident are limited. Authorities said that it happened along the eastbound lanes of Highway 60 in the Hacienda Heights area of east Los Angeles.

It appears that a tour bus was going along the freeway at the time. At some point, a fire broke out in the bus’s engine compartment. The bus stopped along the side of the freeway.

One person reportedly died in the accident. Officials identified the victim as a passenger, 89-year-old Marina Diaz de Pacheco. One other person had unspecified injuries.

Investigations are ongoing at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

I certainly don’t know more about this incident than what’s already been made public in the news. One thing that stood out to me, though, was some reports naming a company that allegedly owns the bus involved in the accident. I looked up that name in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s online SAFER database, which gives a summary of a company’s inspection history over the last two years. The company I found in that system appears to have a vehicle inspection out-of-service rate of more than 25%, which is above the national average.

To be clear, I can’t confirm right now if the company I found is the same one that was involved in this accident, and there would have to be far more thorough investigations to determine if this accident at all relates to vehicle maintenance issues. In my experience, though, if there’s a serious accident involving a company that seems to have issues following the rules, it would be irresponsible not to take that into account in the investigations. Hopefully whoever looks into this accident agrees and acts accordingly.
