Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
No matter how many fatal accident cases I’ve handled, no matter where in the country people are from, the main concern from families often remains the same: How can they be sure their loved one’s crash is getting the attention it deserves?
With an early morning, single-vehicle wreck, that can be a bit challenging. One of the most prudent steps one can take is simply going to the authorities with any concerns and doubts. Are authorities looking at road conditions? Have they inspected the vehicle for defects? Did they pull cellphone records and data from the vehicle’s Engine Control Module? Did they look for cameras that may have caught the accident on video?
If it seems authorities have satisfactory answers, and they address a family’s concerns thoroughly, it’s usually a good sign they’ve done good investigations. But if their answers come up short, that can be a family’s sign that the accident would be better off in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists. Either way, the end result should be the victim’s loved ones feeling assured they’re going to get answers and not be left in the dark.
