Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any serious accident, it’s important to know that the investigations are being handled properly. Sometimes, this means following up with authorities and asking some key questions. Here are some that I always ask when I get a serious crash that comes across my desk.
- Are authorities dedicating the proper time and tools needed to getting clear answers, or is the department ill-equipped for handling complex accident reconstructions?
- Have the vehicles involved been inspected for potential manufacturing defects which may have caused the crash or made the injuries worse?
- Has all electronic data been preserved, including vehicle data, cellphone records, video footage, and GPS information.
In my experience, authorities who can provide satisfying answers to these questions likely have done good investigations. Authorities who can’t likely need back up from independent investigators who can pick up the slack and ensure the victims and families involved get the answers they deserve. What those questions might reveal here remains to be seen.
