How Did This Accident Occur?
My concern is that a lot of people might see reports of an 18-year-old rear-ending a truck and immediately assume the teen driver did something wrong. Obviously, that’s a possibility that needs to be considered. But a lot of people jump to conclusions with teen drivers—assuming they’re all reckless—and they also might believe the old misconception that you’re automatically at fault for rear-ending another vehicle. That would be ridiculous. What if the front vehicle fails to yield making a turn? What if they don’t have working brake lights? What if the victim’s vehicle fails to stop due to some kind of defect?
Ultimately, it’s not about what is or isn’t likely; it’s about what the evidence says. That’s why it’s crucial families are kept in the loop about what investigators are looking into and what kind of questions they’re asking. If authorities can show they’re looking at the situation from all angles and using state-of-the-art tools to dig through the details, it’s very likely they’ll give the victim’s loved ones the answers they deserve. But if it seems like authorities are coming up short or not putting in enough time or effort into getting answers, that may be a sign the crash would be better off in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists.
