The Ford driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. If that’s true, folks may think that means there will be charges, and that’s the end of it. There could be more to the story, however. In fact, there could be an accomplice who also needs to be held responsible: a negligent alcohol provider.
Any time alcohol contributes to an accident, it’s important to find out if the drunk driver was over-served. If a bar, for example, unlawfully serves someone who is obviously intoxicated, they could face criminal investigations, fines, a suspended license, or liability for the resulting injuries. Unfortunately, this is something authorities tend to overlook.
I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers for their role in a serious crash. I can’t count how often a bar only faced criminal investigations because we put the establishment on the authorities’ radar. Perhaps authorities here are being more thorough to confirm or rule out this possibility, but that’s not clear with the little information currently available.
