Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While I can’t confirm what did or didn’t happen here, the simple fact only one person had serious injuries is worth some concern. In my experience, when someone is seriously injured, they’re not always able to speak to the authorities. That means public details that come out may not actually reflect their side of the story.
The problem is when authorities fail to follow up later on, and they end up moving on without ever hearing out the victim. Maybe that isn’t what happened here, but I’ve spoken to many victims and families across my 30 year career who were essentially left out in the wind like that. That’s one of the reasons independent investigators often become a necessary tool in crashes like this, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see that here, as well.
