Accident Report

July 21, 2026, two people were injured following a log truck accident at around 12:30 p.m. along State Route 90.

Preliminary information about the crash says it happened a few miles west of Homer near Kinney Gulf Road.

According to officials, a log truck driver was going along NY-90. Up ahead, reports say a tanker truck stopped due to a tractor ahead of it. The log truck reportedly swerved left of center, and it then struck a Kia driven by a 42-year-old Homer woman. The log truck then went off-road and overturned.

As a result of the crash, both the Homer woman and the log truck driver reportedly had injuries. Authorities said they cited the log truck driver, but further specifics are unavailable at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s not clear what citations authorities issued or if there may be more coming. Most commonly, this sort of thing involves distracted driving, unsafe speeds, or fatigue. Those are obviously worth attention, but I also know how important it is to look for less common and more complex possible factors. For example, could this crash be the result of mechanical issues?

I bring this up because I saw one news report identify the company that owns the log truck involved in this crash. To be clear, I can’t confirm right now if that report is accurate. However, I looked up the named company in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s online database, and I saw concerning data. That company’s rate of trucks being put out of service following a roadside inspection is just above the national average (which is far too high to begin with). In other words, there’s some evidence to support that the company named in that news report might have an issue keeping its trucks in safe, working condition.

Again, I can’t confirm if that company is actually the one involved in this crash without seeing clear evidence for myself. And even if it is, it would take a careful inspection of this truck and its maintenance records to know if this crash was caused or made worse by a mechanical issue of some sort. My point is that someone needs to be looking into these things, and they need to be looking into them ASAP while evidence is still intact.
