How Did This Accident Occur?

When vehicles going along the freeway collide, it’s often the result of distracted driving, unsafe speeds, or following too closely. That’s especially true during rush hour. The problem, though, is this sometimes leads authorities to be lacks in their investigations. Two cars colliding during rush hour on a major freeway must be something ordinary, so why should the investigations be any different than usual? I’ve seen first-hand how this sort of thinking can lead to mistakes.

For example, I rarely ever see authorities inspect vehicles for potential defects. Brake failure, tire issues, steering issues, malfunctions with crash avoidance or lane assistance features, sticky accelerators—these aren’t all that common, but they do happen. It’s important to at least rule them out, otherwise evidence could deteriorate at a time when people need it most.

If authorities can show they’re already looking into these things, that would be good. It’s just not the sort of thing anyone should take for granted unless they see it for themselves. That way, if authorities appear to be coming up short, independent accident reconstructionists can step in to fill in the gaps.
