How Did This Accident Occur?

When people see a vehicle leave its lane and crash at 4 in the morning, their immediate assumption will likely be that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. That’s certainly common, and maybe it happened here. It’s important, though, to let the facts speak for themselves. There’s no telling when something unusual might contribute to a crash, like a sudden tire blowout or a vehicle defect. It’s even important to inspect a vehicle for safety device issues which may have failed to prevent serious injuries (faulty seatbelts, airbags, automatic braking, etc.).

The challenge is these possible factors require efforts to investigate beyond the crash scene. That’s not always something authorities are motivated to do. I can’t begin to count how many crash reports I get across my desk where authorities just began and ended their efforts at the crash scene. This can allow important information to slip through the cracks, and it would be reasonable for anyone looking at that to want a second set of eyes looking things over to ensure they were getting the full story.

Hopefully authorities have been thorough here so that won’t be necessary. It’s just not something I’d ever take for granted. If you think that’s me being too skeptical, let me know your thoughts in the comments.
