How Did This Accident Occur?
Some folks believe retaining wall collapses like this are just freak occurrences. More often, though, they’re the result of an avoidable mistake. In my experience, a lot of those mistakes trace back to employers not giving workers proper safety equipment or employers pressuring workers to cut corners and take risks (usually in an effort to save time and money). Obviously, if that leads to people getting hurt or killed, authorities will look into that.
What’s less obvious, though, is just how challenging things can be for families in terms of actually getting a fair resolution. On top of losing a loved one, families have to navigate the most complex work fatality laws in the whole country. Despite what many think, there isn’t always an automatic process in place for that. A lot of families end up fighting employers for every bit of help they need, which can be a difficult process without the right strategies and evidence.
So, as important as it is to know what happened in a work accident, that goes hand-in-hand with knowing what comes next for the family. Being prepared ahead of time makes navigating Texas work fatality law much more within reach.
