Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One of the more challenging aspects of serious car accidents is when one person isn’t around to tell their side of the story. It’s entirely reasonable for a family to be concerned about that. That’s why it’s important to know that waiting around for authorities to provide answers isn’t always the best approach.

This isn’t to say officers can’t do their jobs. More often, the departments are the problem. They don’t always prioritize accident reconstruction, so even skilled officers may not have the time or equipment they need to conduct a proper investigation. This results in important details going unnoticed as officers are eventually pushed to work on other things.

With independent investigators, these shortcomings can be addressed. Since their priority is getting the facts, they can dedicate all the time and resources needed to looking into even the most complex or unlikely possible factors. Whether that simply confirms what authorities know or reveals new details, the end goal should be for the victim’s family to have all the information they need going forward.
