Accident Report

July 26, 2026, Latonya Kizzee and one other person were injured in a car accident shortly after 10:15 p.m. along State Highway 288.

According to authorities, 55-year-old Latonya Kizzee was traveling in a southbound Toyota Camry on S.H. 288 at Broadway Street when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a southbound Dodge Journey that was allegedly traveling at speeds over the posted limit failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. A collision consequently occurred involving the Journey, the Camry, and a Nissan Altima.

Kizzee reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. The 19-year-old man who had been behind the wheel of the Journey suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. It does not appear that anyone else was hurt. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

When car accidents happen involving alleged speeding and lane deviations, many folks are quick to just blame driver error and move on without much real thought. I do understand that instinct; human error, statistically speaking, does play a role in the majority of car accidents. Could something like distraction, fatigue, or even impairment on the part of the Journey’s driver have caused the wreck? Certainly. However, without more information, I’m not willing to settle on that conclusion just yet. Why? Because over the last three decades of my career I have seen plenty of cases in which thorough investigation ended up uncovering evidence of less likely causes.

I’m not trying to give the impression that I am somehow privy to more details about this accident than are currently available at the public, by the way. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the wreck could have been the result of something gone wrong with the Journey itself rather than driver error. What if it had been dealing with brake failure or throttle issues? Have steering mechanism problems or tire blowouts been considered? Yes, I understand that these things are not very likely, but that does not mean they should not at least be looked into before being ruled out.

I would also be interested to know how well the safety features of the Camry performed in the wreck. Did the airbags deploy correctly? What about the seatbelt? Did it function the way that it was designed? You might be wondering how this is relevant. Well, if these things were faulty in any way, then it is possible that the victim’s injuries ended up being more serious than they should have been.

In-depth vehicle inspections done on the involved vehicles would be able to shed light on any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck which might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get those done. that way nothing important will inadvertently be allowed to slip through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how any why it occurred. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
