Coleman County, TX — July 26, 2024, Larry “LJ” Herron III was killed due to a single-vehicle car accident at around 7:00 a.m. along Highway 206.
Authorities said in initial statements that the accident happened in the area of the Highway 206 and County Road 178 intersection, near Burkett.

According to officials, 20-year-old Larry James “LJ” Herron III was in a Toyota Corolla going southbound along the highway. Weather conditions were apparently foggy at the time of the accident, and the vehicle ended up running off the side of the road. There, Herron’s vehicle overturned repeatedly. LJ Herron was killed as a result of the crash. There did not appear to be anyone else involved in the accident.

Right now, additional details remain unclear. One concern I have is how often I’ve seen authorities mishandle accidents involving poor weather conditions. While some officers know to gather as much evidence as possible after a serious wreck, others tend to write off crashes like this as a driver being unsafe during inclement conditions. That’s obviously a possibility worth considering, but there could have been extenuating circumstances the victim couldn’t necessarily avoid.
Does this stretch of road not have enough reflectors or signs on its curves? Is the speed limit not safe enough? Did the victim’s vehicle experience some kind of defect? Did their airbags and seatbelts function properly? Was there some other driver involved who left the scene? Likely or not, these things happen. Families at least deserve to know such possibilities have been ruled out, otherwise they may be left with doubts at a time when they most deserve some answers. It remains to be seen if authorities here have really taken the steps to get those answers.
