Larnell Lofton Killed in Car Accident in Fort Bend County, TX

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

The driver of the Maserati was allegedly intoxicated due to alcohol at the time of the crash. If that’s true, then there will likely be serious consequences for that driver. But is that all authorities plan on addressing? There’s usually more to these stories than what little I’m seeing right now, but authorities tend to be more concerned with charging someone than actually getting a family the closure they deserve.

Let me give an example to explain why I say this. I had a case not long ago involving a family affected by a drunk driving accident. They just wanted to be sure they explored every possible angle. Well, when we asked if authorities mentioned investigating the bar that served the drunk driver, they were surprised. It never even came up.

Our investigations proceeded, then, and it uncovered clear evidence that the bar kept serving the drunk driver to the point he could barely walk. Not only did they ignore the signs of that patron being a danger to others, they outright broke the law by over-serving the driver. In fact, their behavior was so reckless that the family was angry that authorities never bothered investigating them. Fortunately, the family’s determination to get answers helped to ensure that establishment faced consequences that authorities nearly let them escape.

That may be just one example, but it’s one of countless similar situations I’ve encountered in my career. Some departments are more thorough seeing all parties responsible for an accident held accountable, and this could be one of those exceptions. Unfortunately, those departments are in the minority. That’s why a lot of law-breakers only come to light because the victims and families involved start demanding they get the attention they deserve.
