How Did This Accident Occur?

To be absolutely clear up front, I don’t know more about this specific crash than what’s been reported in the news. That said, any crash involving a vehicle driving into oncoming lanes brings up all too familiar red flags for alcohol. Perhaps authorities mentioned it here just because it would be irresponsible not to look into, or maybe they have direct evidence they’re following up on. Either way, I’ve been a part of hundreds of drunk driving accident investigations. Frankly, wrong-way crashes usually involve drivers who weren’t just intoxicated but extremely so, which raises questions about where they were coming from and if all the of the chaos traces back to a local bar or restaurant that may have unlawfully over-served the driver. Hopefully investigators look into that here.

However, alcohol is far from the only thing investigators should go over. This sort of thing could also involve something unusual or perhaps even unavoidable. Did confusing or missing signage cause it? Was there some kind of emergency going on, medically or otherwise? Did authorities perhaps misunderstand the events leading to the crash due to the chaos of the scene and how challenging it likely has been getting statements from those involved in the crash?

At the end of the day, evidence is what tells the story. Regardless of what is or isn’t likely here, the facts need to speak for themselves. Once the full story is clear, there can be steps to ensure the victims and families involved know what paths are available to them going forward.
