How Did This Accident Occur?
One of the first things authorities do to answer this question is ask the drivers and any witnesses at the scene what happened. However, a big problem with this is that a driver’s injuries might prevent them from giving their side of the story right away. If they’re seriously injured and rushed to a hospital, authorities may just do their reports without ever speaking to that person. A prudent investigators would follow up, and of course other evidence from a thorough accident reconstruction should do most of the talking, anyway.
Howver, when people feel their side of the story isn’t being told fairly, they’ll be unsatisfied—reasonably so. That’s why I always encourage victims and families to follow up with the authorities whenever they can. If they feel authorities are giving a fair account of what happened and letting the facts do the talking, that’s good. But if it seems like authorities are more focused on looking for someone to blame than doing an unbiased accident reconstruction, steps can be taken to put the crash in the hands of professionals who will give everyone a fair chance.
