How Did This Accident Occur?

With so few details available, there will be some who just jump to the conclusion that driver error must have been the cause. Considering the fact that human error plays a role in the majority of car accident, statistically speaking, that is a safe bet. But I’m not willing to make that assumption before the investigation is complete. Why? Because I have been in this line of work for over three decades. I’ve seen plenty of cases in which thorough investigation ended up uncovering evidence of less likely causes.

I’m not trying to imply that I am somehow privy to more details about this accident than are currently available to the public, by the way. As far as I know, driver error—whether due to distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera—remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical. What if, rather than driver error, the wreck was a result of something gone wrong with one or the other of the vehicles? For example, maybe brake failure was a factor? Or perhaps it was throttle issues? Have tire blowouts or steering mechanism problems been considered? I know, these scenarios are not very likely; but that does not mean they shouldn’t at least be looked into.

In-depth vehicle inspections would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get those done. That way nothing important will inadvertently be allowed to slip through the cracks. After all, the loved ones left behind by the victim deserve real answers backed by solid evidence. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
