Harris County, TX — March 14, 2024, Kenneth Wayne Courtney was injured after a two-car accident at around 8:00 p.m. along the Sam Houston Tollway.
Preliminary details about the crash say that it happened along eastbound main lanes of the tollway/Beltway 8 near Kirby Drive.

According to investigators, 68-year-old Kenneth Courtney was in a Ford Taurus going eastbound along Sam Houston Tollway. For reasons unconfirmed, it appears a Cadillac CTS hit Courtney’s Ford from behind. The Ford then veered into the barrier at the exit ramp for TX-288. Due to the crash, Courtney reportedly had serious injuries. The other driver had no reported injuries.

Authorities mentioned that alcohol is a possible factor, but nothing can be confirmed right now. What I’m wondering is, did they mention alcohol just because it’s common, or do they have evidence of alcohol? Officials in Houston are sometimes diligent enough that neither scenario would surprise me.
Houston and Harris County tend to be more proactive than other jurisdictions with holding drunk drivers accountable and even going after the bars and other alcohol providers who illegally over-serve those drivers. In other cities and counties, things are more likely to slip through the cracks. Generally speaking, when our firm handles personal injury cases against bars around Texas, I frankly don’t expect anyone besides us to actually be holding those negligent alcohol providers accountable unless we happen to bring those providers to the attention of authorities.
In Harris County, though, I tend to be more optimistic there will be a parallel criminal investigation into the bar. They do still miss things from time to time, of course. Still, it gives me hope that other jurisdictions will catch on so that making our roads safer won’t depend solely on victims and families seeking answers they feel authorities aren’t giving them.
So maybe authorities here are just being diligent and will rule out alcohol. Or, maybe alcohol will come to light as the cause of this crash. Either way, the important thing is to get victims and families the answers they deserve and, if appropriate, to see wrongdoers held accountable.
