How Did This Accident Occur?
Many people are quick to assume that single-vehicle rollover accidents like this one are a result of driver error. That’s a safe bet, especially considering the fact that human error plays a role in the majority of car accidents. However, I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar accidents in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. It’s because of that that I hesitate to jump to conclusions, as a general rule.
That’s not to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the accident could have been caused by something other than driver error. What if it was due to something wrong with the Camaro itself, for example? On top of that, there is the fact that the vehicle overturned. Not many are aware of this, but the rollover tests that car manufacturers are required to pass do not actually do a very good job of simulating real-world scenarios. I would be interested to know whether or not a design flaw with the Camaro contributed to the fact that it rolled. Why? Because the victim’s injuries might not have been so serious had the vehicle managed to remain safely upright.
An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions, product defects, or design flaws that had a hand in the accident or its outcome. They aren’t generally routine in most accident investigations, so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities don’t take that step, then a third party investigation can always get one done, instead, just to ensure that nothing important falls through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear and detailed understanding of how it happened and why. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation won’t cut it.
