Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

In my experience, single-vehicle accidents don’t always get the attention they deserve. People tend to assume since there’s only one person involved, blame should be obvious. Unfortunately, a driver being a teenager only makes these assumptions worse. But if you asked anyone how they would feel if they or their loved one was involved in a similar crash, they’d all say the same thing: they’d want to know what the evidence said, and they’d want to be sure the story was being told fairly.

That’s why it’s important to follow up with the authorities early on. If it seems like they’re considering things from all angles and gathering the facts, then that’s a good sign. But if it seems like they’re just treating the crash like a low priority and jumping to conclusions, getting the full story might require an independent investigator stepping in and picking up the slack.
