How Did This Accident Occur?
After over three decades in this career, I have had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of single-vehicle rollover accidents. I’ve seen how, sometimes, evidence of less likely factors ends up being unearthed by the investigations. I’m not trying to imply that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that it might be prudent for investigators to look into why the vehicle overturned.
Most people are not aware of this, but the rollover tests that car manufacturers are required to pass do not actually do a very good job of simulating real-world scenarios. I would be interested to know whether or not a design flaw with the Explorer contributed to the fact that it rolled. Why? Because the victim’s injuries might not have ended up being so severe had it managed to remain safely upright. Along that same vein, I hope investigators look into whether or not the safety features of the SUV—like the airbags or the seatbelt—were functioning properly. If they were faulty, then that could also have been a factor in the severity of the victim’s injuries.
Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the Ford so that any product defects or design flaws that had a hand in the outcome of the wreck won’t be allowed to just slide beneath the radar. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to how it happened and why things turned out the way they did. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation won’t cut it.
