Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

After any serious accident, it’s helpful to actually make sure investigators are being thorough. Not all police departments prioritize accident reconstruction, so it’s sometimes up to victims and families to make sure they’re going to get the attention they deserve. A few key questions I always consider:

  1. Do officers have the training, equipment, and time they need to do a full accident reconstruction?
  2. Are the vehicles being inspected for potential electronic or mechanical defects?
  3. Is electronic data being preserved from the vehicles, cellphones, and any cameras nearby the crash scene?

Generally speaking, these questions can act as a canary in the coal mine. If it seems authorities have satisfactory answers, they’re probably doing good work. But if the details aren’t adding up, there may need to be another set of eyes looking things over so nothing important slips through the cracks.
