How Did This Accident Occur?
While I can’t confirm what these preliminary reports say, allegations of possible distracted driving raise all too familiar red flags. In car accident investigations I’m a part of, cellphone data is about the first thing I expect to see. It’s just such a common factor in deadly accidents that it would be irresponsible not to look into it as a possibility.
However, it’s also important to know authorities kept digging into other possible factors even if distraction was a factor. There could be other factors at work. For instance, this happened at a common time of day for alcohol. Was that ruled out? If nothing else, a victim’s loved ones deserve to know they’re getting the full story and not just the easiest explanation authorities could come up with before moving on to other work.
