Houston, TX — June 3, 2025, Joshua Fowlkes was killed due to a shooting that occurred at around 10:25 p.m. at the McDonald’s on Imperial Valley Drive.
Current details say that the shooting happened outside of the McDonald’s located off the corner of Imperial Valley Drive and North Sam Houston Parkway East.
Authorities identified the victim as 30-year-old Joshua Fowlkes. Fowlkes reportedly worked at the McDonald’s but was not working at the time of the shooting. Officials say that Joshua Fowlkes was in the parking lot with a manager at the McDonald’s and the manager’s brother. They were reportedly engaged in an argument at the time when the manager’s brother allegedly shot Fowlkes multiple times, then allegedly fled the scene.
According to officials, Joshua Fowlkes died after being taken to a hospital. The alleged shooter has not been apprehended at the time of writing. Investigations are ongoing.

This isn’t the kind of incident you see every day, so my thoughts are going to sound a bit scattered on this because of how unusual the facts presented in the news are right now.
The first thing that comes to mind is that businesses and managers have a responsibility to ensure that the business is a safe place for people to be. So when I read about a manager’s brother allegedly shooting someone at that business, it raises serious concerns that the news does a poor job of explaining. What was the manager’s brother doing there? Did he work there? Was he just swinging by? Also, were there any signs ahead of time that the manager’s brother could have been violent with people?
I’m sure authorities doing the shooting investigation will cover all the bases in terms of looking into the shooting itself and any other crimes that may have been committed. But in my experience, they’re not likely to look into whether the practices at the business itself could have contributed to the shooting. I think in order to get a full picture of what happened, someone has to look at those things.
