Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With any serious car accident, one of the primary concerns folks have is if their side of the story is being told fairly. To that end, it’s important people understand why authorities alone can’t always guarantee that.

The reality is authorities have a lot to worry about, and sometimes accident reconstruction is treated as a low priority. This can leave officers without the time or equipment they need to do a proper, careful accident reconstruction. As a result, their reports may end up being little more than a single officer’s best guess at what happened.

To make sure all sides of the story are told, investigations need to consider all evidence thoroughly. That’s why a serious wreck generally fares better in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists. They can help ensure even unlikely possible factors get the attention they need so nothing important slips through the cracks. Either their findings will simply confirm what authorities already know, or they’ll catch what authorities missed.
