How Did This Accident Occur?
It’s far too early to say what might have happened here. OSHA investigators everything from vehicle accidents to equipment failure to medical emergencies to structure collapses.
One issue, though, is that OSHA investigations tend to focus solely on their own priorities. They don’t often keep the needs of a victim’s family at the front of their mind. I can’t count how many times across my decades-long career I’ve seen families left in the dark months after an accident, and it took more thorough independent investigations to finally get them the answers they deserved.
So when it comes time for a family to navigate the most complex work fatality laws in the whole country, it can create challenges if no one ever investigated the accident beyond the most basic OSHA report. Perhaps authorities are being more thorough here, but it’s up to families to decide if they want another set of eyes to look things over so nothing slips through the cracks.
