How Did This Accident Occur?
It’s not clear at this point why this truck drove off the road. Was the driver distracted or fatigued? Did he have a medical emergency? Did he swerve to avoid another vehicle? Did the truck have a problem with its throttle or steering mechanism? These are the kind of questions that investigators must consider as they work to reconstruct this accident.
Data from the truck’s engine control module will show its speed, braking and steering inputs before the crash, while in-cab cameras, if equipped, could show what the driver saw, or didn’t see. Cell phone records could show if the driver was texting or interacting with an app, but there should be a forensic examination of the truck if authorities suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash.
Investigators should look into the trucking company as well to determine if the driver was properly trained or if the truck was overdue for any scheduled maintenance or repairs.
This investigation should give the driver’s family a clear view of what happened on State Highway 43.
