Jefferson County, OR — February 19, 2024, Jose Refugio Gamboa-Lupercio was killed while Genaro and Felipe Gamboa-Lupercio were injured in a truck accident at about 4:15 a.m. along U.S. 97.
According to authorities, the accident took place on U.S. Highway 97, the Dalles-California Highway, in the vicinity east of Juniper Butte, Oregon.

Officials indicate that speed and icy road conditions were likely causal factors leading up to the accident. Two CMVs were reportedly traveling southbound on the highway, one behind the other, when a rear-end collision occurred between the two. This collision led to the CMV that had been rear-ended shifting left of center and entering the northbound lanes of the highway. Two oncoming Toyota Tacomas—one red and the other white—collided with the CMV. A northbound GMC Sierra then collided with the Tacomas.
57-year-old Jose Refugio Gamboa-Lupercio—who had reportedly been a back seat passenger in the red Tacoma, incurred fatal injuries due to the accident and was declared deceased at the scene. The two people who had been in the front seats of the red Tacoma—Felipe Gamboa-Lupercino and 62-year-old Genaro Gamboa-Lupercino—both sustained injuries of unknown severity. They were taken to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. No other injuries have been reported.
