Woodbury, NY — January 10, 2024, Jose Payano was killed following an 18-wheeler accident at around midnight along Interstate 87.
The New York State Police said in their initial statements that the crash happened at approximately 12:10 a.m. along southbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 47.
According to officials, 42-year-old Jose L. Payano was the driver of a Volvo tractor-trailer which was apparently stationary along the right shoulder of the interstate. Payano was outside of the vehicle at the time when another 18-wheeler reportedly sideswiped Payano’s Volvo, hitting Payano in the process.
Due to the collision, Payano sustained fatal injuries. The other driver apparently had non-life-threatening injuries. Current information from police says they issued a ticket to the surviving truck driver, however it’s unclear what the citation was or whether or not there are pending charges. Investigations continue.
