Accident Report
Callahan County, TX — April 15, 2026, John Aaron Bristow was killed in a truck accident at about 8:15 p.m. on Interstate 20 east of Putnam.
Authorities said a 2005 Kenworth tow truck was heading west when a tire blew, causing it to veer toward a 2017 Mack semi-truck next to it. Both truck drivers ended up leaving the road after trying to avoid a collision. The tow truck ended up on the shoulder, while the semi went off the road and overturned.
Mack driver John Aaron Bristow, 65, of Shawnee, OK died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to authorities.
Tow truck driver Jose Rosado, 69, of Merkel was not injured, authorities said.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Callahan County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
This crash shatters the myth that accidents have to involve a collision between two or more vehicles. In this instance, the threat of a crash was enough to force the semi-truck off the road. It’s kind of like threatening to punch someone, causing them to flinch and hit their head. The initial threat was responsible for the injuries.
Investigators should look into what caused the tow truck’s tire to blow out. Did it hit something in the road that damaged the tire, or was that tire well past the point of needing to be replaced when it blew out? Examining the tire and the tow truck’s maintenance history should yield some clarity, but only for someone who knows what they’re looking for. Many law enforcement agencies don’t have that kind of expertise, in my experience, so the truck driver’s family may opt to seek an outside investigator.
It’s also worth investigating whether the Mack truck was in proper working order, or if it had some mechanical deficiency that caused it to overturn when the driver took evasive action. His family deserves to know everything that may have contributed to this crash.
