How Did This Accident Occur?

Head-on crashes like this typically occur because one vehicle left its lane, but which one in this instance?

Evidence from the scene, witness statements and data from the vehicles should help sort that out, but investigators still much figure out why a vehicle moved into oncoming traffic.

Was the driver distracted, possibly by a cell phone? Or was there an issue with the vehicle’s steering mechanism?

Those questions can be answered by scrutinizing cell phone data and examining the vehicles before they are repaired or scrapped. Both of these options are time sensitive, so investigators can’t afford to wait.
