UPDATE (August 12, 2024): Further details from authorities identified the driver of the SUV hit by the 18-wheeler as 22-year-old Jesus Garcia Rivera. Garcia Rivera was said to have serious injuries. The identity of his passenger, also seriously injured, remains unclear.

Authorities also said the 18-wheeler allegedly failed to yield, leading to the collision. Even if that’s true, though, that wouldn’t likely make this as open-and-shut as people would think.

A lot of people tend to think that if authorities blame someone for a crash, everything is straight-forward. Commercial truck wrecks, though, can be incredibly complex, and authorities might not have the resources to investigate things thoroughly. For example, if they don’t have the tools or experience to pull maintenance records, check training and safety procedures, and analyze GPS and ECM data, they could miss crucial details.

That’s why I’ve found independent accident reconstructionists more reliable in how much information they can catch following a serious commercial truck wreck. Getting answers can’t be limited to just the crash scene. If there were other factors at work, then they may require more thorough efforts from more experienced, dedicated investigators. Ultimately, those involved in a crash like this deserve answers. If a crash like this is treated like a walk in the park, it’s likely something important will got lost in the shuffle.
