How Did This Accident Occur?
Over the last three decades in which I’ve been in this career, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze thousands of car accidents. Because of the number of cases that I’ve seen where less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation, I’m slow to jump to conclusions, no matter how things might appear on the surface.
That’s not to say that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else does outside of the investigation. As far as I know, things like the ubiquitous “driver error” remain on the table as a possible cause. However, I hope the authorities are being thorough and openminded as they investigate. Things like mechanical malfunctions and product defects should be looked into, as well. Just because they are less likely to have been the cause does not mean they should be overlooked.
On top of that, I would be interested to know whether or not the Elantra’s safety systems worked properly. Was it equipped with collision avoidance? If so, why didn’t it work? Did the airbags deploy correctly and in a timely manner? What about the seatbelts? Did they function the way they were designed? You might be wondering why this even matters. Well, if any of these things were faulty, it’s possible that they turned a survivable accident into a fatal one.
Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the Elantra. That’s what will be able to pinpoint any mechanical issues or product defects that played a role in the wreck or its outcome. After all, the people affected by this accidence—including those left behind by the deceased—deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to not only how it happened, by why things turned out the way they did. That kind of clarity—real answers backed by solid evidence—just can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
