Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

After any serious car accident, it’s important to know whether or not the crash investigations are being prioritized. It can surprise people when authorities, left to handle everything on their own, come up empty-handed. As such, some key questions early on can help keep things on track.

  1. Are authorities dedicating the time and resources needed for a thorough accident reconstruction?
  2. Have the vehicles been inspected for potential defects, including airbags and other safety features?
  3. Has all electronic evidence been preserved from cellphones, the vehicles, and video cameras?

These questions give authorities an opportunity to show they’re giving a crash the attention it deserves. If their responses can alleviate the concerns of victims and families, they’re likely doing good investigations. But if their responses instead fall short, that can be a sign that independent investigators need to pick up the slack.
