Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

The reports leave out the most important question: why did the dump truck leave the roadway in the first place? That single detail could mean the difference between this being a case of driver error, a mechanical failure, or even an issue with the roadway itself. Without that information, all we know is the result, not the cause.

When a heavy truck rolls over, several areas deserve close investigation. The truck’s engine control module can show speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. A mechanical inspection could reveal whether the brakes, steering, or suspension failed. Cargo securement is another factor—dump trucks often carry loose or heavy loads, and if that weight shifts unexpectedly, it can quickly cause a rollover.

Driver condition also matters. Investigators will need to determine whether fatigue, distraction, or a medical event played a role. And since this happened on a specific stretch of roadway, it’s also worth looking at whether the road surface, shoulder conditions, or signage contributed. In my experience, crashes like this are rarely explained by a single factor—it usually takes gathering and piecing together evidence from several sources to see the full picture.

Key Takeaways:

  • Reports don’t yet explain why the truck left the road, which is key to understanding the crash.
  • Black box data, vehicle inspections, and cargo securement checks can reveal critical details.
  • Driver condition and company records should be reviewed for contributing factors.
  • Road conditions may also play a role and should not be overlooked in the investigation.
