How Did This Accident Occur?

Initial reports say a Nissan SUV crashed into a semi-truck on U.S. 250, but at this point we don’t know why. Was the driver distracted? Was his vision obstructed? Was the semi-truck speeding? Did the Nissan have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? These are the kind of questions that authorities must consider as they investigate this crash.

Investigators likely will gather physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage. Cell phone records could add more context, showing what each driver was doing at the time.

If investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this crash, an outside expert likely will be needed to conduct a forensic examination of the vehicles. Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such inspections, in my experience, but the Nissan driver’s family deserves to know as much as possible about what caused this crash.
