How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people would look at an accident like this one—a motorcycle in a single-vehicle collision late at night—and just assume that driver error was behind it. Statistically, I’ll admit that would be a safe bet. Driver fatigue, distraction, illness, or even impairment are not uncommon. However, I think that motorcyclists get a bad rap. I’ve seen plenty of cases that turn up evidence that goes against the grain of the stereotype over the last three decades.
That’s not to say that I know anything more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I’m simply pointing out that something could have gone wrong with the motorcycle itself, leading to the collision. Motorcycles, after all, though smaller than passenger vehicles, are still complex machines. What if something went wrong with the steering? Was there a tire blowout? Maybe it was suffering from brake failure? Those are just a few of the many things that could have contributed.
Hopefully, the authorities who are in charge of this investigation are keeping an open mind and being meticulous in their work. However, if it appears they are being shortsighted, a third party investigation can always step in to take up the slack, just to make sure that all the bases are covered. When push comes to shove, Mr. Aguirre deserves real answers backed by solid evidence, not a halfhearted investigation that saddles him with unmerited blame as he works toward recovery.
