UPDATE (January 10, 2024): The victim who lost his life as a result of this incident has been identified as 48-year-old Jason Underhill, of Longview.
Upshur County, TX — December 8, 2023, one person was killed and two others were injured in a truck accident just before 6:00 p.m. along U.S. Highway 271.
According to reports, an 18-wheeler was traveling northbound in the inside lane of U.S. 271 approaching the Bear Road intersection when the accident took place.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee was reportedly stopped in the inside lane U.S. 271 northbound awaiting southbound traffic to clear in order to make a safe left turn onto Bear road. For as yet unknown reasons, the 18-wheeler did not make a lane change to the outside lane or slow to a stop for the jeep. Rather, it swerved left in order to avoid a rear-end collision, entering the southbound lanes of the highway. This resulted in a collision with an oncoming Ford F-250 occupied by a 48-year-old man. Despite the evasive action, the front right of the trailer in tow behind the 18-wheeler still collided with the back left of the Jeep. A southbound Ford Fusion which had been traveling in the outside lane of the highway was also involved in the accident.
The 48-year-old sole occupant of the Ford F-250 incurred fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Two occupants of the Jeep—a 29-year-old woman and a 3-year-old girl—sustained minor injuries; they were transported to local medical facilities in order to receive treatment. No additional injuries have been reported.
This incident is under investigation by local authorities who have recommended charges of criminal negligent homicide against the driver of the 18-wheeler. Additional details pertaining to this accident—including the identities of those involved—are not available at this point in time.
