How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s far too early to answer this question for certain, and I can only hope authorities have been fair in their assessments behind the scenes. That’s always a concern, but motorcyclists in particular can get a bad rap. A lot of folks unfairly believe all riders are dangerous drivers, and they might jump to conclusions rather than focusing on letting the evidence speak for itself.

A crash like this can involve anything from failure to yield to distraction to alcohol to fatigue to a vehicle defect. Distinguishing between all that means putting bias aside and focusing on the facts. Sometimes, when authorities are inexperienced, ill-equipped, or rushed for time, they may lean too much on their gut. If their bias isn’t in check, then this can lead to faulty conclusions and unfair assumptions. Families at the receiving end of those reports might find details aren’t adding up and look for independent investigators to set the record straight.

I’ve seen motorcycle accidents go both ways. In some situations, independent investigators found that authorities were professional and thorough, and they did good investigations. Other times, it turned out authorities jumped to conclusions and missed crucial details. Either way, the end result was that the victim’s loved ones knew they were getting a fair and accurate account of what happened. That’s the least any family could ask for, so I hope steps are being taken to ensure that happens here.
