Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It’s obviously serious that alcohol was alleged as a factor here, but that may lead some folks to think this all is open-and-shut. Even when something obviously wrong like drunk driving leads to a crash, it’s important that investigations are thorough. Especially with alcohol, there could be more than just a single reckless driver responsible for the accident.

For example, I’ve handled hundreds of alcohol-related accident cases, and there’s often a negligent alcohol provider responsible for contributing to them. It’s unlawful in Texas for bars and other establishments to serve people who are obviously intoxicated. Doing so can expose those establishments to potential consequences, both seeing them held accountable and ensuring they clean up their act.

So if alcohol was indeed a factor here, have authorities looked into where the alcohol came from? If nothing else, those involved in a serious accident deserve to know that all responsible parties are going to face the appropriate consequences.
