Accident Report
July 11, 2026, Itzel Gomez and one other were injured following a car accident at 2:00 a.m. along Bissonnet Street.
According to preliminary reports from officials, the crash happened at the intersection of Bissonnet Street and the Southwest Freeway.
Investigators said that 34-year-old Itzel Gomez was in a Kia Telluride going eastbound on Bissonnet. A GMC with six occupants was going southbound. At the intersection, officials say the GMC crashed with the Kia.
Itzel Gomez reportedly had serious injuries. A 38-year-old woman from the GMC also reportedly had serious injuries. Other injuries were not confirmed.
Authorities say they recommended charging the GMC driver for DWI, but they did not release any other details.
How Did This Accident Occur?
It’s a lot more likely that someone facing DWI charges at 2:00 a.m. on a Saturday was under the influence of alcohol rather than drugs. Believe it or not, this is an important distinction to make. That’s because in Texas, alcohol providers may also face consequences if someone they served alcohol to causes a serious accident. Let me explain.
Put simply, it’s unlawful in Texas for bars and other alcohol providers to over-serve someone who is obviously intoxicated. If they do so, and that person’s intoxication leads to an accident, the alcohol provider can be responsible for their role in the crash. So, a driver facing a DWI charge related to alcohol rather than drugs could have legal consequences which extend beyond the person behind the wheel.
Whether or not that’s what happened here would require further information about the factors leading up to the crash. My hope is that someone looked into these possibilities rather than just writing all of this off as open-and-shut. These preliminary details could just be the tip of the iceberg.
