El Paso, TX — October 27, 2024, Israel Torres died and Isaiah Jimenez and Kyleigh Russell were injured in a car accident on Edgemere Boulevard in El Paso.
Authorities say the accident happened around 2:40 a.m. on the 11200 block of Edgemere at War Arrow Place. Preliminary investigation suggests Torres was driving south on War Arrow in a Ford Mustang when he turned onto Edgemere. While turning, he failed to yield the right-of-way to a westbound Ford F-150. The pickup then T-boned the Mustang in the roadway.

Israel Torres was fatally injured in the crash. His passenger, 19-year-old Kyleigh Russell, received non-incapacitating injuries. The F-150 driver, later identified as 19-year-old Isaiah Jimenez, also reportedly sustained non-incapacitating injuries.

Some may feel there’s little more to this accident than a serious crash caused by a simple failure to yield. Investigating more carefully and finding out why the victim allegedly didn’t stop for the sign is important, of course, but generally folks may think the bases are pretty much covered by just the preliminary investigation.
Maybe it’s just the decades in my field talking, but I’m not quite so convinced a few sentences in the news really tell the whole story. As I said there’s still the matter of clarifying why the Mustang driver didn’t wait his turn, but before anybody pins everything on driver mistakes it’s still important to look into possible factors like poor road conditions, low visibility, inadequate or missing signage, vehicle malfunctions or defects, and many others.
The point of going over the accident with a fine-toothed comb is not to overcomplicate things, and I’m not suggesting I know something police don’t. Long experience has just taught me that traffic investigators sometimes settle for a “good enough” explanation and move on, even though further effort would have uncovered crucial details that changed how the crash was understood. I believe the people affected by the wreck deserve to know they have the whole story, so I hope someone makes sure they get it.
