Officials indicate that an eastbound Chrysler 300 occupied by four people—which had allegedly been traveling at high speeds—failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly lost control before swerving left of center and entering the oncoming lane of traffic. There, it was involved in a head-on collision with the westbound Dodge.

The collision caused the Chrysler to overturn, coming to rest in a roadside ditch where it apparently caught fire. All four occupants of the Chrysler suffered fatal injuries and were declared deceased at the scene, as were Small, De La Cruz, and Martinez. The two children from the Dodge sustained injuries of unknown severity and were flown to an area medical center in order to receive necessary treatment.
