Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It’s often surprising for people to see an official agency like OSHA release so little information about such a serious accident. What might surprise them more is how often families behind the scenes are given just as little information.

I’ve been working with families affected by deadly work accidents for over 30 years. Far too many of them are left empty-handed despite waiting months for authorities to finish their investigations. At the end of the day, though, authorities tend to only focus on their own priorities. Those don’t always align with the needs of a family, who has to navigate the most complex work fatality laws in the whole country.

If it turned out OSHA was more thorough behind the scenes here, that would be good to know. The last thing any family should have to worry about is getting answers. But if getting those answers took more thorough independent investigations, it would be far from the first time.
