Accident Report
June 13, 2026, Gladis Rivas was injured due to a car accident just before 12:45 a.m. along the I-45 service road.
According to authorities, 32-year-old Gladis Rivas was traveling in an eastbound Honda HR-V on the Gulf Freeway service road at the Delafield Street intersection when the accident took place. Traffic in the area had apparently come to a stop. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Honda failed to appropriately control its speed. It was consequently involved in a rear-end collision with the back of a Ford Fusion.
Rivas reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the wreck. The 29-year-old man who had been behind the wheel of the Ford may have been hurt, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When people hear about rear-end car accidents, the knee-jerk reaction tends to be to simply blame the person who had been behind the wheel of the striking vehicle. While driver error is certainly a possible cause in this case, I’m not ready to settle on that conclusion without more information. Why? Because over the last three decades, I have seen enough rear-end accident cases in which thorough investigation managed to uncover evidence of less likely causes.
For the record, I’m not implying that I have more details about this accident that aren’t available yet to the general public. Driver error, as far as I know, remains on the table as a possibility. However, I would like to point out that hypothetically, the Honda’s failure to slow to a stop could have been a result of something gone wrong with the vehicle rather than lack of input from the driver. For example, what if it had been dealing with brake failure? Or maybe the throttle had somehow gotten stuck in the open position? Rest assured, I’m well aware that these things are extremely unlikely; but that does not mean that they should automatically be ruled out.
An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to shed light on any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might otherwise have flown unnoticed under the radar. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get one done. That way nothing important will inadvertently be allowed to slip through the cracks. After all, when everything is said and done, the people affected by this accident deserve more than the vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation.
