Accident Report

August 11, 2026, a girl was injured following a fireworks accident involving a Parks Department employee at General Douglas MacArthur Park.

Authorities said that the incident happened at the park located at Jefferson Street and Dongan Hills Avenue.

Preliminary reports say that a 10-year-old girl found an M-80 firework at the park and showed it to a Parks Department employee. Authorities allege that the Parks Department worker helped the girl light the M-80, which then reportedly exploded in her hand.

The girl sustained serious injuries to her hand as a result and was taken to a hospital. It appears police arrested the Parks Department worker, who faces charges for endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.

How Did This Accident Occur?

This is a very shocking story, to say the least. Safety of a child should be an absolute priority for any public department or official. Beyond simply charging someone (rightfully so), there should probably be an examination of the hiring processes and safety procedures of this department and its employees to make sure this sort of thing doesn’t happen again.
